{Craft Room Redo: Vintage Lamp Makeover}

Y'all, I am getting so close to being finished with my craft room makeover!  I need to make two curtains, decorate over the desk, find a floor lamp, and put out my new rug.  Then I can finally post the final reveal!  (Do you remember what it looked like before?)  I want to share a project with you that I just finished and that I am SO HAPPY with!  A while back, I found this pair of lamps at my local thrift store.

I knew they had potential, and the price was right: they were $4 each!

One of the shades had a tear in it, but I figured I'd do something totally different with the shade anyway.

The first thing I did was take out the old wiring.  (They might have worked, but I wanted to rewire them to be safe.)  Before rewiring, I primed the lamps with Rustoleum's metal primer.

Then I painted them with a pretty turquoise Valspar spray paint.  (It's the same paint I used on the bench I saved from certain destruction.)

After the lamps had a new finish, I rewired them with a kit.  At this point, I realized both lamps were not going to fit in my craft room.  So I just started focusing on one of the lamps.  Of course, something had to be done to the torn shade.  I wanted to try the plain wire frame look, so I ripped off all the fabric.  I liked it, but I wasn't in love with it.  Then I stumbled on this tutorial from Holly at Bella Nest on a link party.  I then knew that I MUST put chicken wire on my lampshade!  I found a roll at the Feed n' Seed in town.  The lady working there thought I was pretty strange when I said I needed it for a lampshade.

As soon as I got home, I started wrapping the shade with the chicken wire.  I used small pieces of wire to attach the chicken wire around the frame.  And let me give you a warning: when you do anything with chicken wire, wear gloves!  No matter how careful you are, you will probably cut yourself if you don't.  After cleaning the weird greasy substance off the wire, I primed the shade with the same primer I used for the bases and then sprayed it white.  I couldn't leave it plain after seeing Holly's rolled flowers, so I made different fabric and felt flowers of my own.  I used vintage earrings for the centers of two of the flowers.  I attached the flowers to the shade with hot glue by sandwiching the chicken wire between the flowers on the outside and felt on the inside.

The final touch was adding hot pink ric-rac to the top and bottom of the frame.

When I finished today and put the frame on the lamp and the lamp on the table my dad and I built (I'll share the tutorial for it and its aged wood top later.), I can't lie that I kind of did a happy dance because I love it so much!!!  I'll let the pictures do all the talking.

After seeing the lamp (and a sneak peek of my new gallery wall) are you excited to see the reveal?  I know I'm excited to share it with you!  :)

  53. Awww, so pretty! Love the turquoise and pink combo. I think I might try this for a lamp redo, but I'm afraid it would be too bright and blinding... we have fluorescent lights and had the shade off for a while and every time I'd look in its direction I'd have purple vision; needless to say I got tired of that! BUT if I cover it with tissue paper on the inside... Hmm, that could work! Thank you for sharing!! Looking at all your tuts, and your craft room reveal, it's just so lovely!! The perfect combination of whimsy without being too much, just my style!

  54. WOW! Don't be offended, but I'm gonna copy this!! I must have one:) LOL
    my question is: did you make those fabric flowers yourself and if you did do you have tutorials?
    thanks

  65. I am trying to make something like this for a hair bow holder in my daughter's room. I got the fabric of the shade and it is incredibly sticky with glue. I soaked it in acetone, but I still can't get it all off. Did you have this problem?
